Question : 24 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
(a) Draw the structure of major monohalo products in each of the following reactions:
(b) Which halogen compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in SN2\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}2 reaction:
(i) CH3Br\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{Br} or CH3I\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{I}
(ii) (CH3)3C−Cl(\mathrm{CH}_3)_3\mathrm{C}-\mathrm{Cl} or CH3−Cl\mathrm{CH}_3-\mathrm{Cl}
Solution:
(a) (i) C6H5−CH2−Cl\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_5-\mathrm{CH}_2-\mathrm{Cl} (ii)
(b) (i) The steric barrier surrounding the target atom affects the rate of the SN2\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}2 reaction. As CH3I\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{I} presents less of a barrier, it will undergo the SN2\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}2 reaction more quickly than CH3Br\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{Br}.
(ii) Since CH3Cl\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{Cl} is the major halide, it hinders OH−\mathrm{OH}^- stability to act less, allowing it to react with SN2\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}}2 more readily than (CH3)3CCl(\mathrm{CH}_3)_3\mathrm{CCl}.
