Question : 29 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
(a) Complete the following equations:
(i) Cr2O72+2OHightarrow\mathrm{Cr}_2\mathrm{O}_7^{2-} + 2\mathrm{OH}^- ightarrow
(ii) MnO4+4H++3eightarrow\mathrm{MnO}_4^{-} + 4\mathrm{H}^+ + 3e^- ightarrow
(b) Account for the following:
(i) Zn\mathrm{Zn} is not considered as a transition element.
(ii) Transition metals form a larger number of complexes.
(iii) The EE value for the Mn3+/Mn2+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}/\mathrm{Mn}^{2+} couple is much more positive than that for Cr3+/Cr2+\mathrm{Cr}^{3+}/\mathrm{Cr}^{2+} couple.
OR
(i) With reference to structural variability and chemical reactivity, write the difference between lanthanoids and actionoids.
(ii) Name a member of the lanthanoid series which is well known to exhibit +4 oxidation state.
(iii) Complete the following equation:
MnO4+8H++5eightarrow\mathrm{MnO}_4^{-} + 8\mathrm{H}^+ + 5e^- ightarrow
(vi) Out of Mn3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+} and Cr3+\mathrm{Cr}^{3+}, which is more paramagnetic and why? (atomic nos: Mn=25\mathrm{Mn} = 25, Cr=24)\mathrm{Cr} = 24)
Solution:
(a) (i) Cr2O72+2OHightarrow2CrO42\mathrm{Cr}_2\mathrm{O}_7^{2-} + 2\mathrm{OH}^- ightarrow 2\mathrm{CrO}_4^{2-} +H2O+ \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(ii) MnO4+4H++3eightarrowMnO2\mathrm{MnO}_4^{-} + 4\mathrm{H}^+ + 3e^- ightarrow \mathrm{MnO}_2 +2H2O+ 2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(b) (i) The transition metals are compounds that form at least 1 stable ion, where the compound has an incomplete dd subshell. Zn\mathrm{Zn} is not a transition metal because it forms only ions with all the 3d3d electrons present.
(ii) Transition metal shows a variable oxidation state, so they form a large number of complexes.
(iii) It is because Mn2+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+} is more stable than Mn3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+} due to stable half filled 3d53d^5 configuration, whereas Cr3+(t2g)(3d5)\mathrm{Cr}^{3+} (t_{2g}) (3d^5) are more stable than Cr2+\mathrm{Cr}^{2+}.
OR
(i) The differences between lanthanoids and actinoids with respect to their structural variability and chemical reactivity are as follows:
(a) Actinoids are radioactive, while lanthanoids are not radioactive.
(b) The ionisation enthalpies of the early actinoids are lower than those of the early lanthanoids. Actinoids show the oxidation state from +3 (most common) to +7 , while lanthanoids show the oxidation state from +3 up to +7 .
(c) Actinoids are more reactive and have more complex magnetic properties than lanthanoids.
(ii) Cerium is a lanthanide element that is known to exhibit the oxidation state of 4
(iii) The complete equation is as follows:
MnO4+8H++5eightarrowMn2+\mathrm{MnO}^{4-} + 8\mathrm{H}^+ + 5e^- ightarrow \mathrm{Mn}^{2+} +4H2O+ 4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(iv) Mn2+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+} is more paramagnetic because it has more number of unpaired electrons than Cr3+\mathrm{Cr}^{3+}.
