Question : 4 of 8
Marks: +1, -0
SECTION -C
(i) State two important features of Einstein's photoelectric equation.
(ii) Radiation of frequency 1015ย Hz10^{15} \text{ Hz} is incident on two photosensitive surfaces PP and QQ. There is no photoemission from surface PP. Photoemission occurs from surface QQ but photoelectrons have zero kinetic energy. Explain these observations and find the value of work function for surface.
Solution:
(i) Two important features of Einstein's photo electric equation
(ii) Explanation of observations and finding value of work function of surface QQ
(i) Maximum kinetic energy (Kmaxโก)(K_{\max}), of emitted electrons, depends linearly on frequency of incident radiations
Kmax=hvโˆ’hv0K_{\text{max}} = h v - h v_0
Existence of threshold frequency for the metal surface ฯ•0=hv0\phi_0 = h v_0
(Any other relevant feature)
(ii) Since no photoelectric emission takes place from PP it means frequency of incident radiation (1015ย Hz)(10^{15} \text{ Hz}) is less than its threshold frequency (v0)p(v_0)_p.
Photo emission takes place from QQ but kinetic energy of photoelectrons is zero. This implies that frequency of incident radiation is just equal to the threshold frequency of QQ.
For QQ,
work function
ฯ•0=hv0\phi_0 = h v_0
=6.6ร—10โˆ’34ร—10151.6ร—10ย eV= \frac{6.6 \times 10^{-34} \times 10^{15}}{1.6 \times 10} \text{ eV}
=4.125ย eV= 4.125 \text{ eV}
