Two crystals C1 and C2, made of pure silicon, are doped with arsenic and aluminium respectively.
(i) Identify the extrinsic semiconductors so formed.
(ii) Why is doping of intrinsic semiconductors necessary?

Solution:

(i) Arsenic is pentavalent. So, C1 doped with arsenic will form n-type semiconductor.Aluminium is trivalent. So, C2 doped with aluminium will form p-type semiconductor.
(ii) Doping is necessary to increase the conductivity of semiconductor at normal temperature.
