Question : 3 of 12
Marks: +1, -0
Explain the formation of the barrier potential in a p−np-n junction. 2
Solution:
Formation of barrier potential: A p−np-n junction is formed by bringing pp-type and nn-type semiconductors together in a very close proximity. At the instant of pp - nn-junction, movement of free electrons from nn-side and free holes from pp-side diffuse across the junction and combine and thus leave -ve ions in pp-side and +ve ions in nn-side.These two layers of +ve and -ve ions form the depletion region and the potential difference thus sets up is called potential barrier.
