Question : 5 of 16
Marks: +1, -0
You are required to design an air-filled solenoid of inductance 0.016 H having a length 0.81 m and radius 0.02 m. The number of turns in the solenoid should be
Solution:
We use the formula for the number of turns per unit length of a solenoid:
L=μ0n2AlL=\mu_0 n^2 A l
where:
L = 0.016H (Inductance)
l = 0.81m (Length of solenoid)
r = 0.02m (Radius)
A=Ï€r2A = \pi r^2 (Cross-sectional area)
n =   Nl\;\frac{N}{l} (Turns per unit length)
Rearranging for N:
N=  Lμ0A×lN = \sqrt{\;\frac{L}{\mu_0 A}} \times l
Substituting values:
N=  0.016(4π×10−7)×(π×(0.02)2)×0.81N = \sqrt{\;\frac{0.016}{(4\pi \times 10^{-7}) \times (\pi \times (0.02)^2)} \times 0.81} =  16×81100×1000×10−11×16π2= \sqrt{\;\frac{16 \times 81}{100 \times 1000 \times 10^{-11} \times 16 \pi^2}}
N=  4×9×10004π=  9000πN = \;\frac{4 \times 9 \times 1000}{4\pi} = \;\frac{9000}{\pi}
=N≈2866= N \approx 2866
