Question : 34 of 84
Marks: +1, -0
What volume of oxygen is required to burn completely 90dm390 \mathrm{dm}^3 of butane under similar conditions of temperature and pressure?
2C4H10+13O28CO2+10H2O2 \mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}+13 \mathrm{O}_2\rightarrow8 \mathrm{CO}_2+10 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
Solution:
2C4H10 2 vols.+13O2 13 vols.8CO2+10H2O\underset{\text{ 2 vols.}}{2 \mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}}+\underset{\text{ 13 vols.}}{13 \mathrm{O}_2}\rightarrow8 \mathrm{CO}_2+10 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
2 Volume of butane =90dm3=90 \mathrm{dm}^3
1 Volume of butane =45dm3=45 \mathrm{dm}^3
\therefore Volume of O2\mathrm{O}_2 required =13×45=13 \times 45
=585dm3=585 \mathrm{dm}^3
