Why does a bottle of soft drink cool faster when surrounded by ice cubes than by ice cold water, both at 0 ∘ C ?
Solution:
Because 1 gm of ice at 0 ∘ C takes 336 J of heat energy from the drink to melt into water at 0 ∘ C . Thus drink loses an additional 336J of heat energy for 1 g ice at 0 ∘ C than for 1 gm ice-cold water at 0 ∘ C . Therefore cooling produced by 1 g ice at 0 ∘ C is more than that by 1 gm water at 0 ∘ C .
