Question : 4 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
How can the production of dihydrogen, obtained from ‘coal gasification’, be increased?
Solution:
The process of producing ‘syngas’ from coal is called “coal gasification”.
C(s)+H2O(g)\mathrm{C}_{(s)} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_{(g)} 1270K\xrightarrow{1270K} CO(g)+H2(g)\mathrm{CO}_{(g)} + \mathrm{H}_{2(g)}
The production of dihydrogen can be increased by reacting carbon monoxide of syngas mixtures with steam in the presence of iron chromate as catalyst.
CO(g)+H2O(g)\mathrm{CO}_{(g)} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_{(g)} Catalyst673K\xrightarrow[\text{Catalyst}]{673 K} CO2(g)+H2(g)\mathrm{CO}_{2(g)} + \mathrm{H}_{2(g)}
This is called water-gas shift reaction.
