Question : 5 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Describe the bulk preparation of dihydrogen by electrolytic method. What is the role of an electrolyte in this process?
Solution:
Dihydrogen is prepared by the electrolysis of water using platinum electrodes in the presence of a small amount of acid or alkali.
2H2O(l)\mathrm{2H_2O}_{(l)} →acid/baseElectrolysis\xrightarrow[\text{acid/base}]{\text{Electrolysis}} 2H2(g)+O2(g)\mathrm{2H_{2(g)}+O_{2(g)}}
During electrolysis, the reactions that take place are :
H2O\mathrm{H_2O} ⇌ H++OH−\mathrm{H}^+ + \mathrm{OH}^-
At cathode :
H++e−\mathrm{H}^+ + \mathrm{e}^- → H
H + H → H2(g)\mathrm{H_{2(g)}} ↑
At anode :
4OH−\mathrm{4OH}^- → 4OH+4e−\mathrm{4OH} + 4\mathrm{e}^-
4OH → 2H2O(l)+O2(g)\mathrm{2H_2O}_{(l)} + \mathrm{O_{2(g)}}
The hydrogen prepared by this method is of very high purity.
