Question : 26
Total: 40
Is there any change in the hybridisation of B and N atoms as a result of the following reaction?
B F 3 + N H 3 → F 3 B . N H 3
Solution:
In B F 3 , B is s p 2 hybridised and has one vacant p-orbital which gets filled by accepting a lone pair of electron present on the N-atom of N H 3 . Nitrogen in this adduct acts as donor atom and B F 3 acts as an acceptor. So, hybridization of B in B F 3 changes from s p 2 to s p 3 whereas there is no change in hybridization of N in N H 3 and in the adduct.
