Question : 8 of 37
Marks: +1, -0
In a parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates, each plate has an area of 6 × 103m210^{-3}m^2 and the distance between the plates is 3 mm. Calculate the capacitance of the capacitor. If this, capacitor is connected to a 100 V supply, what is the charge on each plate of the capacitor?
Solution:
A = 6 × 103m210^{-3}m^2 , d = 3 mm = 3 × 10310^{-3} m , V = 100 V
C0C_0 = ε0Ad\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d} = 8.85×1012×6×1033×103\frac{8.85 \times 10^{-12} \times 6 \times 10^{-3}}{3 \times 10^{-3}} = 17.7 × 101210^{-12} F or C0C_0 = 17.7 pF = 18 pF
On connecting the capacitor across 100 V supply, charge on each plate of the capacitor is
Q0Q_0 = C0VC_0V = 18 × 101210^{-12} × 100 or Q0Q_0 = 18 × 10910^{-9} C
