Question : 39 of 43
Marks: +1, -0
[Fe(H2O)6]3+[Fe(H_2O)_6] ^{3+} is strongly paramagnetic whereas [Fe(CN)6]3[Fe(CN)_6] ^{3–} is weakly paramagnetic. Explain.
Solution:
In presence of CN^{–}, (a strong ligand), the 3d electrons pair up leavingonly one unpaired electron. The hybridisation is d2^{2}sp3^{3}forming innerorbital complex. In the presence of H2_2O, (a weak ligand), 3d electrons donot pair up. The hybridisation is sp3^{3}d2^{2}forming an outer orbital complexcontaining five unpaired electrons hence, it is strongly paramagnetic.
