Explain [Co(NH3)6]3+[Co(NH_3)_6] ^{ 3+} is an inner orbital complex whereas [Ni(NH3)6]2+[Ni(NH_3)_6] ^{2+} is an outer orbital complex.

In the presence of NH3, the 3d electrons pair up leaving two d orbitalsempty to be involved in d2sp3d^{2}sp^{3}hybridisation forming inner orbital complexin case of [Co(NH3)6]3+[Co(NH_3)_6] ^{ 3+}.
In [Ni(NH3)6]2+[Ni(NH_3)_6] ^{2+} , Ni is in +2 oxidation state and has d3^{3}configuration, thehybridisation involved is sp3^{3}d2^{2}forming outer orbital complex.
