What is meant by unidentate, bidentate and ambidentate ligands? Give two examples for each.
Solution:
Unidentate ligands are those which bind to the metal ion through asingle donor atom. e.g., C l – , H 2 O .Bidentate ligands are those which bind to the metal ion through two donoratoms. e.g., ethane-1,2-diamine( H 2 N C H 2 C H 2 N H 2 ) , oxalate ( C 2 O 4 2 – ) ion.
Ambidentate ligands are those which can bind to metal ion through twodifferent donor atoms. e.g.,N O 2 – and S C N – ion.
