Question : 20 of 32
Marks: +1, -0
Can you store copper sulphate solution in a zinc pot ?
Solution:
EZn2+/Zn=0.76 VE^\circ_{\mathrm{Zn}^{2+}/\mathrm{Zn}} = -0.76\ \mathrm{V},
ECu2+/Cu=0.34 VE^\circ_{\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}/\mathrm{Cu}} = 0.34\ \mathrm{V}
We have to check whether the following reaction takes place or not.
Zn(s)+CuSO4(aq)ZnSO4(aq)+Cu(s)\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)} + \mathrm{CuSO}_{4(\mathrm{aq})} \rightarrow \mathrm{ZnSO}_{4(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{Cu}_{(s)}
Ecell=ECu2+/CuEZn2+/ZnE^\circ_{\text{cell}} = E^\circ_{\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}/\mathrm{Cu}} - E^\circ_{\mathrm{Zn}^{2+}/\mathrm{Zn}}
=0.34 V(0.76 V)=1.1 V= 0.34\ \mathrm{V} - (-0.76\ \mathrm{V}) = 1.1\ \mathrm{V}
Since EcellE^\circ_{\text{cell}} is positive, the reaction takes place and we cannot store CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO}_4solution in a zinc pot.
