Question : 21 of 32
Marks: +1, -0
Consult the table of standard electrode potentials and suggest three substances that can oxidise ferrous ions under suitable conditions.
Solution:
Oxidation of ferrous ions means:
Fe2+→Fe3++e−;\mathrm{Fe}^{2+} \rightarrow \mathrm{Fe}^{3+} + e^{-};
EFe3+/Fe2+∘=0.77 VE^\circ_{\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}/\mathrm{Fe}^{2+}} = 0.77\ \text{V}
Only those substances can oxidise Fe2+^{2+} to Fe which are stronger oxidising3+^{3+}agents and have positive reduction potentials greater than 0.77 V sothat EMF of the cell reaction is positive. This is for elements lying belowFe3+^{3+}/Fe2+^{2+} in the electrochemical series, for example, Br2_{2}, Cl2_{2} and F2_{2}.
