Question : 2

Why are Mn2+compounds more stable than Fe2+ towards oxidation of their +3 state?
Solution:
Mn2+ has an electronic configuration of 1s22s22p63s23p63d54s0. To goto Mn3+ state the electron has to be taken out from stable d5orbital whichis half filled and requires very high ionisation energy. In case of Fe2+ ion,the third electron is taken out from 3d6configuration which results inmore stable 3d5configuration.
