Explain why Cu+ ion is not stable in aqueous solutions?
Solution:
Cu+ in aqueous solution undergoes disproportionation, i.e.,
2Cu+ ( a q ) → Cu2 + ( a q ) + Cu(s)
The stability of Cu2 + ( a q ) rather than Cu+ ( a q ) is due to the much more negativeΔ h y d H° of Cu2 + ( a q ) than Cu+ , which more than compensates for the secondionisation enthalpy of Cu.
