Explain why Cu+ ion is not stable in aqueous solutions?
Solution:
Cu+in aqueous solution undergoes disproportionation, i.e.,
2Cu+(aq) → Cu2+(aq)+ Cu(s)
The stability of Cu2+(aq) rather than Cu+(aq) is due to the much more negativeΔhydH° of Cu2+(aq) than Cu+, which more than compensates for the secondionisation enthalpy of Cu.
