Write the reactions of F 2 and C l 2 with water.
Solution:
Fluorine reacts vigorously with water and oxidises water tooxygen.
2 H 2 O + 2 F 2 → 4 H F + O 2
Chlorine dissolves in water to form chlorine water. It slowly reacts withthe water to form a mixture of hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid.
H 2 O + C l 2 → H C l + H O C l
Hypochlorous acid is very unstable. In presence of sunlight, it decomposesto give HCl and nascent oxygen.
H O C l
H C l + O
This oxygen is responsible for oxidising and bleaching properties ofchlorine.
