How is ammonia manufactured industrially?
Solution:
Industrially ammonia is manufactured by Haber’s process.
N 2 ( g ) + 3 H 2 ( g ) → 2 N H 3 ( g ) ;
Δ f H 0 = − 46.1 k J ∕ m o l
In accordance with Le-Chatelier’s principle, high pressure and lowtemperature would favourthe formation of ammonia. The optimumconditions for production of ammonia are a pressure of 200 × 105 Pa(about 200 atm), a temperature of ~700 K and the use of a catalyst suchas iron-oxide with small amounts of K 2 O and A l 2 O 3 to increase therate ofattainment of equilibrium.
