Question : 66
Total: 74
Considering the parameters such as bond dissociation enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy and hydration enthalpy, compare the oxidising power of F 2 and C l 2 .
Solution:
Fluorine is a better oxidising agent than chlorine because E ° F 2 ∕ F – is higher than E ° C l 2 ∕ C l – . It is mainly due to low bond dissociation energy, high hydration energy and lower electron gain enthalpy, non-availability of d-orbitals in valence shell, that results in higher reduction potential ofF 2 than chlorine.
