Solution:

Let the length of the pole be ‘x’ m

Length of pole painted red = 40% of x = 0.4x

Length of pole painted white

= \left(\frac{1}{5}\right) \times (x - 0.4x) = 0.12x

Length of pole painted black

= \left(\frac{1}{2}\right) \times (x - 0.4x - 0.12x) = 0.24x

Length of pole painted yellow = x - 0.4x - 0.12x - 0.24x = 0.24x

⇒ 0.24x = 12

\Rightarrow x = \frac{12}{0.24} = 50 \text{m}

∴ The length of the pole is 50 m
