Mughal Emperor Akbar founded Fatehpur Sikri as his capital city.
Fatehpur Sikri is a city predominantly in red sand-stone and is situated at a distance of 37 km from Agra.
It was built by the Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-din Mohammad Akbar, in honour of the great Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti.
The city was planned as the capital but the shortage of water compelled Akbar to abandon the city.
Fatehpur Sikri was built during 1571 and 1585.
It is enclosed by an 11 km long fortification wall interspersed with numerous gateways.
