Solution:

Aluminium is extracted by electrolysis of fused or molten alumina

(\mathrm{Al}_2\mathrm{O}_3)

containing cryolite

(\mathrm{Na}_3\mathrm{AlF}_6)

added to lower the melting point of alumina to around

1140\,\mathrm{K}

and to enhance its conductance, as fused alumina is a bad conductor of electricity.
