Cowbirds and cuckoos are the most commonly studied avian brood parasites. The eggs of many brood parasites mimic those of their hosts, to deceive hosts to accept, have harder shells, to avoid rejection by puncture, and require slightly shorter incubation times, causing a size advantage for parasitic nestlings.
