Between the meiosis I and meiosis II, the phase where the cell rests is called the interkinesis or interphase II. During the prophase I of meiosis I, the homologous chromosome crossover and recombination of genes occur. This process is facilitated by an enzyme called recombinase. This occurs in the pachytene stage of prophase I of meiosis I. Termination of chiasmata is the final stage of meiotic prophase I in which the displacement of chiasmata to the ends of chromosomes occurs. The chromosomes are fully condensed and the meiotic spindle is assembled to prepare the homologous chromosomes for separation. Synapsis refers to the process of attachment or pairing of homologous chromosomes in the zygotene stage of prophase 1 of meiosis 1 .
