Decomposition is the process of breaking down of complex organic matter into inorganic substance. Detritus includes dead remains of plants and animals including fecal matter and acts as the raw material for decomposition. Degradation of humus by activity of microbes leading to release of inorganic nutrients is called Mineralisation. Accumulation of the dark coloured amorphous substance called humus, is called humification.
