x^2 - 3x - 40 = 0

y^2 - 15y + 54 = 0

Solution:

x^2 - 3x - 40 = 0

\Rightarrow x^2 - 8x + 5x - 40 = 0

\Rightarrow x(x - 8) + 5(x - 8) = 0

\Rightarrow (x - 8)(x + 5) = 0

x = 8 \text{ or, } -5

II.

y^2 - 15y + 54 = 0

\Rightarrow y^2 - 9y - 6y + 54 = 0

\Rightarrow y(y - 9) - 6(y - 9) = 0

\Rightarrow (y - 9)(y - 6) = 0

\Rightarrow y = 9 \text{ or, } 6
