Solution:

2x^2 + 11x + 14 = 0

\Rightarrow 2x^2 + 4x + 7x + 14 = 0

\Rightarrow 2x (x + 2) + 7 (x + 2) = 0

\Rightarrow (x + 2)(2x + 7) = 0

x = -2 \text{ or, } -\frac{7}{2}

II.

4y^2 + 12y + 9 = 0

\Rightarrow (2y)^2 + 2 \times 2y \times 3 + (3)^2 = 0

\Rightarrow (2y + 3)^2 = 0

\Rightarrow 2y + 3 = 0

y = -\frac{3}{2}

Clearly, x < y
