The Indian National Congress(INC),established in 1885, was divided into two groups (in the year 1907) mainly by extremists and moderates at the Surat Session of the Congress. Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Dadabhai Naoroji and Pherozshah Mehta were the leading figures among the other moderate leaders. Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak were among the most prominent leaders of extremists or Assertive Nationalists.
