(2) Jinnah had declared 16 August 1946 to be the Direct Action Day. Also known as the Great Calcutta Killings, it was a day of widespread riot and manslaughter between Hindus and Muslims in the city of Calcutta in the Bengal province of British India. The 'Direct Action' was purported to show the strength of Muslim felings both to British and Congress.
