(4) Ashoka (269-232 BC) is regarded as one of the greatest kings of all times. He was the first ruler to maintain direct contact with people through his inscription. Under Ashoka, the Mauryan Empire reached its climax. For the first time, the whole of the sub continent, leaving out the extreme south, was under imperial control.
