Solution:

2x^2

+ 11x + 14 = 0

⇒

2x^2

+ 4x + 7x + 14 = 0

⇒ 2x (x + 2) + 7(x + 2) = 0

⇒ (x + 2) (2x + 7) = 0

⇒ x = - 2 or

-\frac{7}{2}

II.

2y^2

+ 17y + 33 = 0

⇒

2y^2

+ 6y + 11y + 33 = 0

⇒ 2y (y + 3) + 11(y + 3) = 0

⇒ (2y + 11) (y + 3) = 0

⇒ y =

-\frac{11}{2}

or , - 3

Clearly, x > y
