The Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by the Lord Dalhousie. It was one of the instruments of annexation of Indian Territory. Under this policy, the provinces or kingdoms were annexed who did not have natural heir. Under this many provinces such as Satara, Jaitpur, Jhansi, etc., were annexed into British rule. This policy became one of the immediate cause of the Great Revolt of 1857.
