Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India who oversaw the creation of the independent states of India and Pakistan. He arrived in the country on February 20, 1947, tasked with avoiding a partition of the subcontinent, however, could not stop it.He brought forward the date of the partition from June 1948 to August 15, 1947. He played instrumental role in passage of Indian Independence Act, 1947.
