(4) A lightning conductor ismade up of a sharp pointedmetal (usually copper metal, asit is a very good conductor)connected direct ly to theground. It is placed higherthan the roof so that if lightningstrikes, it strikes the conductorbefore it can reach thehouse. It should be pointedbecause when the negativecharge is discharged by thecloud, it will first strike thepointed tip of the lightningconductor and quickly travelto the earth. The dischargewill be quickly over and thehouse and its surroundingswill be saved from damage. Thepointed nature of the lightningconductor helps it to acquiremore number of positivecharges on its tip.
