Toluene reacts with bromine in presence of light to give benzyl bromide. While in presence of Fe, it gives, p-bromotoluene. In which methyl group is ring activating and para directing. When o-bromotoluene and p-bromotoluene is treated with Mg in the presence of dry ether, phenyl magnesium bromide is formed.
