The EPA's origins may be traced back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm Conference), which was held in Stockholm in June 1972 and attended by India, with the goal of taking suitable steps to improve the human environment. The Act implements the decisions made at the Stockholm Conference.
