(c) Article 47 of the Directive Principles of State Policy mentions that the State shall regard the raising of the level of nutrition and standard of living of its people and improvement of public health as among its primary duties. Here, public health also includes the protection and improvement of the environment without which public health cannot be assured. The chapter on fundamental duties under Article 51-A (g), states “It shall be duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures.”
