Shaurya Chakra is a Peacetime Gallantry Award. It was instituted on January 4, 1952 as Ashoka Chakra Class-III and was renamed on January 27, 1967 as Shaurya Chakra and is awarded for gallantry, otherwise than in the face of the enemy. Vir Chakra was instituted on January 26, 1950 and is awarded for acts of Gallantry in the presence of the enemy. The Yudh Seva Medal is one of India's military decorations for distinguished service during war time. Param Vir Chakra was instituted on January 26, 1950 to recognise the most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy.
