Coastal area of Tamil Nadu receives rainfall in the winter season due to northeast trade winds. The north–east monsoon is a three–month–long season spanning from October to December. The average rainfall of the South Arcot district is 1,060.3 mm. The rainfall is heavier in the coastal area compared to interior areas. South Arcot and Ramanathapuram receive over 50 percent of their annual rainfall from the north–east monsoon.
