The students of Westside Academy had a thrilling morning yesterday. They were completely fascinated by the experiences and storytelling of the renowned wildlife rescuer, Ms. Sarah Jenkins. The entire auditorium sat in hushed silence for an hour. All that broke the quiet was a gasp of amazement or the sound of spontaneous applause, appreciating a daring rescue tale. Out of her rugged travel duffel came tracking collars, heavy-duty gloves, and thermal cameras of every possible size and seemingly vital importance. It happened in such quick succession that everyone was left gasping. One or two young students stepped forward to examine a thick, bite-proof suit, wondering how someone could move so quickly while wearing such heavy gear. As if that was not thrilling enough, she brought out a fully recovered, majestic falcon to perch right on her arm. This was the grand finale.
The children did not want the session to conclude. They shouted for ‘more’, ‘keep going’. But Ms. Jenkins gave them a brave smile and gently returned the bird to its carrier. The students milled about, eagerly discussing the wonders of wildlife. Then they walked out excitedly recounting what they had seen and how wonderful it was. One of the boys, Leo, declared loudly, it was the most adventurous wildlife seminar of the semester.
