Three challenges facing rural development in India.
(i) Infrastructure development : Basic infrastructure requirements like electricity, irrigation, credit availability. transport facilities, construction of village roads and feeder roads to nearby highways, etc., are the areas which still need attention of the government so as to gain commanding heights.
(ii) Alleviation of poverty : Poverty in rural India is an area that should be taken up as a mission for improvement in the living conditions of particularly those living at the bottom of pyramid. This problem may be tackled by emphasizing or greater access to productive employment opportunities. This means that people engaged in a farm and non-farm activities in rural areas have to be provided with various means that help them increase the productivity.
(iii) Development of Human Capital : Rural human capital must be developed by taking sincere steps in the direction of education and health. This means enabling them better and more affordable access to healthcare, sanitation facilities at homes and workplaces and education for all must be given top priority for rapid rural development.
