The two salient features of India's pre-independence occupational structure are :
(i) Agriculture : The primary occupation.
(a) The agricultural sector accounted for the largest share of workforce with 75%.
(b) The state of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bangal witnessed a decline in the dependence of the workforce and the agricultural sector.
(ii) Industry and service: The bleak occupation:
(a) The manufacturing sector and the service sector accounted for only a small fraction of the total workforce.
(b) Industrial sector suffered from fow growth rate due to lack of investment initiatives and unfavourable tariff structure introduced by the British.
