How did the court scene at Motihari change the course of India's struggle for freedom?
Solution:
The episode at Champaran was a turning point for India's struggle for freedom. This was when Gandhiji decided to oppose the British rule in India. Gandhiji went to Motihari to gather complete information about the indigo plantation contracts from the peasants; he was accompanied by several lawyers. He was on his way to meet a peasant who was mistreated by some of the indigo planters; he was stopped by a messenger of the police superintendent who served him a notice which asked him to leave. However, Gandhiji ignored the notice and continued his investigation. A case was filed against him and he was arrested. On the day of the trial, unanimously, a large crowd of peasants gathered near the court demanding the release of Gandhiji. When it became impossible to control them, Gandhiji spoke to them and they all obeyed him. Gandhiji managed to convince the court that he was not there to break laws but he wanted to help the peasants. He was immediately granted bail and later, the case against him was dropped.
