In Edla's dealing with the peddler, she was compassionate and generous. Discuss with reference to the story 'The Rattrap'.
Solution:
Unlike her father, Edla was compassionate, generous and sympathetic girl. Because of her behaviour, she was able to reform the peddler. When the ironmaster got to know the true identity of the peddler, he became furious and decided to take the matter to the sheriff. But Edla was considerate and did not turn him out of their house on Christmas Eve. She was anxious about the stranger who had no single place in the whole country where he was welcomed. She wanted him to enjoy a day of peace with them. This way she incited the potential goodness in the peddler and won his confidence because of which he left for her a gift before leaving her house. It was Edla's kindness and generosity that a vagabond transformed himself.
