Question : 11
Total: 11
Why do you think Gandhi considered the Champaran episode a turning point in his life?
Solution:
Gandhi fought for the peasants of Champaran and due to his determination to solve their problems, other lawyers, who were residents of adjoining states, also joined him as they could not sit at home when being a complete stranger to that place, Gandhi, was fighting tooth and nail. After strategic move of Gandhi and the lawyers the Britishers had to concede to the demands of peasants though not fully. In this struggle he refused the help of Charles Freer Andrews as he wanted to fight for the cause of humanity. He was able to lift the fears off the panic stricken peasants. This was a turning point. If he could free the peasants from the administrative clutches of Britishers at Champaran, he could make the entire India win self-confidence, liberty and independence following the same approach. Thus, his crusade started for liberating India from British oppression.
