Question : 42

Discuss any two merits and demerits of the Green Revolution in the agricultural sector in the Indian economy.
Solution:
Merits of Green Revolution:
(i) Increase in Production: It contributed to a large increase in crop productivity and hence, crop production. HYV seeds reduced the time lag between sowing and harvesting of crops.
(ii) Shift to Commercial Farming: Substantial increase in output created marketable surplus. It induced the farmers to shift from subsistence farming to commercial farming. This is a sign of growth and development.
Demerits of Green Revolution:
(i) Limited Crops: Green revolution was confined mainly to the production of food grains like wheat and rice. There has been no such increase in production of pulses and commercial crops like jute, cotton etc.
(ii) Economic Divide: It benefitted only rich farmers. Small and marginal farmers could not take advantage of it because it used expensive inputs for farming.
