How is washing soda prepared from sodium carbonate ? Give its chemical equation. State the type of this salt. Name the type of hardness of water which can be removed by it?
Solution:
The three products of the chloralkali process are sodium hydroxide ( NaOH ) , chlorine ( Cl ) and hydrogen ( H ) .
(i) Sodium hydroxide is used in the manufacturing of paper, soap and detergents.
(ii) Chlorine is used in the manufacturing of bleaching powder, production ofHCl , paints etc.
(iii) Hydrogen is used as a fuel for rockets and in hydrogenation of oils to obtain vegetable ghee.

Washing soda is sodium carbonate containing 10 molecules of water of crystallisation. It is also called as sodium carbonate decahydrate. Chemical equation for sodium carbonate Decahydrate (Washing soda):
Na 2 CO 3 + 10 H 2 O → Na 2 CO 3 ⋅ 10 H 2 O
Sodium carbonate is an organic salt. Sodium carbonate is the disodium salt of carbonic acid with alkalinising property. When dissolved in water, sodium carbonate forms carbonic acid and sodium hydroxide. Sodium carbonate decahydrate can remove temporary and permanent hardness from water. 'Sodium carbonate is soluble but calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are insoluble. The water is softened because it no longer contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions in it.
